Rick Wells, and the Spiders from Marsh

2015 saw the 25th anniversary of publican Richard (known to all as Rick) Wells,
being installed as Landlord at the Spiders Web pub, Carr Lane, Grimsby, after
taking over from previous tenant, Peter Abbot, aka Alec Gilroy as Pete was a
lookalike of the Coronation Street character, played by actor Roy Barraclough.

Rick and his family moved from their hometown of Leicester to Grimsby in 1990,
with Rick being made licensee immediately on arrival. His dad Barry, and mum
Rita were instrumental in setting up the new venture - also helping to pull
pints and generally assisting Rick with the day to day running of the pub. Rick
now runs the Spiders with wife Mandy; with Barry having sadly died in 2000 Rita
    retired and returned to Leicester.

The pub was once owned by the
now legendary Barnsley Brewery, who were taken over in 1961 by John Smith's,
but remained brewing until the 27th March 1976, when Smith's closed down the
brewery, and installed "Magnet Ales" into all of their pubs.

It has long been claimed that
the game of darts was invented at the pub! (the jury’s still out on that one).
However the Spiders remains popular with punters hiring the function room for
births, marriages, barmitzvahs & charities. There are regular quiz nights,
poker evenings, folk, rock and blues bands, a lively public bar and a quiet
lounge with most importantly, Real Ale :- John Smith cask, Taylor Landlord, and
    two guest beers.

So we offer our congratulations to Rick on achieving 25yrs as a licensee, and
joining the likes of Bill Parkinson of Willy's and Paul Rowntree of the No 2,
Under The Clock pub as being three of the longest serving landlords in the
region. If you know of any other old timers, then please let us know.

The Spiders has been a regular in Camra's Good Beer Guide, over the last few
years, and is well worth a visit. It’s on a main bus route and the bus stops
directly outside. But first try the public bar, where a certain "bird",
will ask you for a kiss!

    Keep on rocking Rick and
